Also is it better to hide the detector or to leave in full range if I am pulled over? I am so tired of the speed traps and police extortion to raise revenue. Our city spends hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to fund extra traffic police rather than address our drug and other crime problems.

Worth the extra range.
Leave it in full view.

Yes false alerts are worth the extra range to me. But falses can get annoying
I personally recommend an Escort 8500 x50 if your main worry is around town driving
Or you could get a Escort 9500i which will allow you to use GPS to lock out the false radar alerts
